English Language Instruction

Language can be one of the larger hurdles in the settlement process. Without knowing the language, simple tasks such as asking for directions, shopping for food or finding employment is extremely difficult.

The Welcome Centres’ English Language Classes are instructor-led and supported by a computer language lab. Language skills training increases learning, social and employment opportunities. Command of the English language gives immigrants the confidence to venture out into the wider community and immerse themselves in the rich cultural and economic fabric of York Region.

Full Time English Language Classes

English Language Classes in the Welcome Centres help newcomers to Canada learn the English language skills essential to their social, economic and cultural integration. The full time program is available to adult newcomers at a range of levels from beginner to advanced (Literacy to Level 7). Students learn English quickly and have ample opportunity to speak and participate in communicative activities to strengthen their language skills. Program features include:

• English communication skills developed through reading, speaking, listening, grammar, and writing exercises;
• cultural excursions to places of interest and guest speakers from community support services;
• assistance in accessing resources in the community.

Part Time English Language Classes

The part time program is available in the evening or on Saturdays. A variety of classes cater to the needs of students in specific areas such as English Classes for Seniors, Classes for Conversational English, Citizenship Preparation, etc.

Enhanced Language Training (ELT) for Internationally-Trained Professionals

ELT programs in the Welcome Centres provide job-specific, advanced-level English language training to adult Newcomers. The goal is to provide language training to match the skills and qualifications of internationally trained professionals. The program also includes hands-on computer skills upgrading, a job placement component as well as job search workshops and resume preparation supports. Internationally trained professionals in the following sectors can enroll in the 18-week ELT program to improve their language skills and prepare for employment:

• Accounting & Finance;
• Office Administration & Customer Service;
• Personal Support Workers.

Child minding facilities and transportation allowance may be available to those who qualify.
