WELCOME CENTRE PARTNERSHIP
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The Welcome Centre Immigrant Services is a one-stop service designed to guide and support immigrants in York Region.
The Welcome Centre service delivery model is based on a holistic flexible approach that provides a broad range of cross-sector services and expertise to immigrants/newcomers under one roof, supporting their need for information, assistance and resources in a welcoming, culturally-sensitive way. By using a coordinated, integrated case management system, clients are able to develop a one-to-one trusting relationship and access all of the services they require to help them integrate economically and socially into the Canadian Labour Market.
Services at the Welcome Centre include: settlement and integration services, language training, accreditation and qualifications information, employment supports and other services based on community needs (such as legal services, mental health services, culturally-appropriate family counselling etc.)
The five Welcome Centre projects are managed by a unique partnership of immigrant serving community organizations including COSTI Immigrant Services, Catholic Community Services of York Region (CCSYR), Centre for Information and Community Services (CICS), Job Skills and Social Enterprise for Canada (SEC). Funding for this unique partnership has been provided by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
The Welcome Centre in Vaughan, officially opened in June 2007, is the first of a vision that will see four additional Welcome Centres set up throughout the Region to meet the needs of immigrants, right in their own communities. The Welcome Centre Newmarket proposes to have service operating by May of 2010, with Mobile Service Delivery rolling out in the community prior to opening. The remaining three new locations, Richmond Hill, Markham North and Markham South, have projected openings in the summer months.
The lead agencies will be hiring to fill a variety of positions at the new Welcome Centre locations. Positions will be posted here as they become available.
